March 2009

Buckwheat Cross-Country Ski Classic - March 2009

Over 23 years ago, local Skagway legend Buckwheat Donahue came up with the idea of a ski race. Today it has evolved into a little bit of everything: there are 50K, 25K, and 10K ski races, a 5K snow shoe race, and, well, one big party that lasts for two days. The “Buckwheat” is a family event where good sportsmanship shines like the sun reflecting off the snow-covered raceway. There's a dinner the evening before the event, a pancake breakfast the morning of the race, and a post race awards dinner followed by a dance with live entertainment. All of these events take place in Skagway, but the race itself takes place just across the Canadian border, near Log Cabin, in beautiful British Columbia , where the snow is, well, perfect. The traditional track does not accommodate skating. It follows the historic “Trail of ‘98” along the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.

Last year the almost 300 smiling competitors came from Whitehorse, Marsh Lake, Anchorage, Juneau, Douglas, Wasilla, Atlin, Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, Haines, Washington, Northwest Territories, Talkeetna, and Skagway.

Sponsored by the Skagway Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary #25, the $50 entry fee includes breakfast and dinner; any profits are donated to the Skagway School Ski Club. Volunteers needed and welcomed!

Call Su at (907) 983-2127 or Jeff (907) 983-2354 for details.

Registrations or donations can also be mailed to The Buckwheat Ski Classic, P.O. Box 636, Skagway, AK 99840
