Thank you for your interest in Skagway, Alaska, Gateway to the Yukon. On our website you will find background information on Skagway’s attractions and activities, facilities, and other visitor related information. Skagway offers a variety of story ideas from our outdoor adventures to the latest news at our major attractions. A list of current story ideas is available in the press kit; please contact me if you require editorial assistance.

A variety of services for print, digital and broadcast travel media are also available. We maintain a library of rights-protected digital images and some video to complement your story. If you need images to complement your story, please visit our website and fill out a request for photos.

The Skagway Convention and Visitors Bureau also has offers a hosting program for media on assignment visiting Skagway to do story research. Depending on the nature of the assignment, we can assist with itineraries, accommodations, meals and passes to attractions. Please note that transportation is the sole responsibility of the media. For hosting assistance, please visit our website and fill out a request for hosting.

Additionally, we would greatly appreciate you sending us a copy of any Skagway, Alaska stories highlighting our wonderful tourism offerings.

2018 Special Events List

Buckwheat Ski Classic

March 24, 2018

The Buckwheat Ski Classic is a cross country ski race held on the fourth Saturday in March on the Log Cabin Ski Trails. Fast becoming an international event with entrants from Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon, Austria, and Germany.  Amateurs and professional skiers alike will find this course matches their abilities and is a competition not to be missed. There are 50K, 25K and 10 K adult races, as well as a 5K for kids 12 and under. Online registration begins in January on the race website.

Skagway Folk Festival & Spring Art Show

April 20–22, 2018

Answering the question “What do you do in the winter”, the Skagway Arts Council presents a wonderful collection of artwork created by Skagway Residents. The show is at the AB Hall on Broadway & 2nd Avenues. It is free to the public. Donations are welcome.

North Words Writers Symposium

May 30–June 2, 2018

Four days of writing workshops, talking about writing, and engaging with writers in the spectacular setting that is Skagway and Dyea. 2018 keynote author: Susan Orlean

Fran Delisle Cancer Awareness Walkathon

June 3, 2018

This beautiful walk follows the Dyea road along the scenic Taiya Inlet, through spruce forest to historic downtown Skagway. Volunteer staffed stations provide aid and treats along the way.  There is also a half walk, starting in Long Bay. $20 entry fee includes shirt and lunch. All money raised by the walk provides cancer screenings and aid to Skagway residents diagnosed with cancer. Sponsored by the Skagway Eagles Auxillary #25 and the Emblem Club.

Duff’s Skagway Marathon

June 10, 2018

Difficult but endlessly rewarding, the Skagway Marathon, Half Marathon, and Walking Half Marathon has quite the reputation.  The course climbs multiple hills as it traces its way through pristine Southeast Alaskan fjord coastline, through a glacially-carved valley, an enchanting Sitka Spruce forest, over the Taiya River trestle bridge, past numerous trickling streams, up West Creek Valley, and breathtaking mountain peaks and alpine scenery.

Being a Boston Marathon qualifier is a great bonus for serious marathon runners who have that goal in mind.

International Softball Tournament

June 29–July 1, 2018

Annual softball tournament with teams from Alaska and Canada competing.  Three days of solid fun filled games.

Skagway 4th of July Parade and Festivities

July 4, 2018

Our July 4th celebration has been history making since Soapy Smith rode at the head of our first parade in 1898.  Old fashioned family fun day with races, contests, and events for all to enjoy.  Events include spike driving contest, hotdog eating contest, cornhole tournament, arm wrestling, and egg toss.  Be sure to check out our ducky derby too. 1500 little plastic duckies race to a finish line over a route that includes passing through 2 culverts, under railroad tracks, always in danger of getting caught in the trees lining the bank and the water loving dog that likes to pursue them.  1st duck across the finish line wins $1,000

NPS Junior Ranger Day

July 19, 2018

If you are lucky enough to be at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park on the third Thursday in July, join us for Junior Ranger Day!

This carnival celebrates the youth that will become the next generation of stewards of the National Parks. In previous years, the event has featured Tlingit Heritage Dancers, a junior fire fighter obstacle course, numerous hands on crafts & activities, and live birds of prey. The event usually takes place between 10am and 2pm at the Moore House.

Klondike Road Relay

September 7–8, 2018

This 110 mile relay race begins in Skagway, Alaska on Friday evening and continues all night along the Klondike Highway.  It ends in Whitehorse, Yukon on Saturday afternoon. Teams of 10 members from all over the world compete in this event. The road is open to regular traffic.

Christmas Tree Lighting

November 30, 2018

Officially kick off the holiday season Skagway style! Join local carolers and witness the lighting of the tree as the town crier declares the start of the holiday season. But that’s not all. Stick around and admire the incredible holiday lighting fire truck display by the Skagway Fire Department and their volunteers. This is something you do not want to miss!

Santa Train
